Bollywood Drug saga is not new to the world. Ever since the film industry was established in Bombay (now Mumbai), it has been the center of controversy. Starting from the under the veil sexual escapades of old generation actors , to the latest drugs episodes. Nothing is a taboo in Bollywood.
A country with 1.3 billion people need escape from the daily chaos and trauma. Bollywood provides the perfect recipe of glamour, money and drug scandals. Thanks to COVID19, movie theaters are already shut down for months. The latest bollywood drug scandals will only worsen the industry prospects to normalize early on.
In terms of the number of movies per year and worldwide audience, Bollywood(Including Tollywood,Kollywood,Mollywood,Pollywood) is clearly bigger, producing 1,000 movies in a typical year watched by a worldwide audience of 3 billion, compared to Hollywood’s 500 movies annually watched by 2.6 billion viewers worldwide. Bollywood is also one of the biggest film industries in the world in terms of the number of people employed and the number of films produced.
An industry with exposure to media every second cannot possibly escape the scrutiny it brings along. The drugs fiasco is only tip of the ice berg. Dark secrets of bollywood would need a book to be written. Doing drugs in bollywood inner circle parties is not a new phenomenon. Party drugs are available everywhere. One only needs to visit some popular pubs in Mumbai. Disco Jockeys or pub owners would keep eagles eye on customers. Only the chosen ones get to do the drugs under the protected supervision of the pub manager. Code words are used to convey the drug quantity, quality and prices.
Sanjay Dutt Drug Fiasco
Just two decades ago, Sanjay Dutt was into biggest controversy of Bollywood of different nature. The combination of Drugs and Weapons reached its peak, thanks to his closeness to underworld. Sanjay was rotten through years of drug abuse. Its amazing how he carried on with that kind of systemic body damage to make it big in Bollywood. Sanjay Dutt was surely the King of Drugs in his early years. No other bollywood superstar has this kind of historical heritage.
Karan Johar is our quintessential silk daddy of the generation Z. Actually Karan Johar is bridge between nineties bollywood and todays fashionista nutcases. He brings unique value to the table, NEPOTISM. Ever since he made big hit movies(dull serials that run in theaters) with Shah Rukh Khan, he has amassed wealth disproportionate to his value add. Glittering fancy silk dresses that would even fade faintest of intellect. Story lines that would fuck the brains with sentimental dialogues surpassing wildest of emotional limits.
Karan Johar is rumored to be supplying drugs to popular bollywood actors. During these drug parties, he would decide the star cast of his movies to come. Guess the actors know for sure that it takes few grams of heroine or cockaine to digest Karan Johar movie experiments. How about those who watch his movies in theaters ? Do we have antidote for his drug ridden encirclement of gullible viewers ?
Karan Johar, the silk mafia leader
Recently, Sushant Singh Rajput suicide case has brought to light another angle of drug abuse. The new drug peddlers are acting in multiple fronts. Rahil Vishram , also called “Sam Drug Uncle” in Bollywood inner circles, has been nabbed by NCB(Narcotics Control Bureau). The team seized 928 gm of charas and Rs 4,36,000 in cash during the raid on Vishram’s house. Supposedly would be producer of Bollywood, changed tracks after swallowing the bitter bollywood pill. What else comes easier to a dreamer than selling drugs to those who sell dreams .
The Drug Peddler plus Producer
But is he the King of Drugs ? No way. The rabbit runs deep into the hole up to some very senior politicians and businessmen. What we see today is only tip of iceberg. The rampant supply of drugs to Punjab through porous borders on India-Pakistan is source of these white packets landing in Mumbai corridors.
The drug peddlers named many famous bollywood actors including Deepika Padukone, Rakul Preet Singh, Sara Ali Khan, Shraddha Kapoor. We suspect that almost all the inner circle gang of Karan Johar might be taking drugs including Vicky Kaushal, Ranbir Kapoor, ,Sonam Kapoor & Alia Bhat.
Drug Queens in style
Kangna vents her soft frustration
Current Drama Queen Kangana Ranaut has accepted in an old video that she consumes drugs. A woman who portrays strong characters on screen, is found to be drug addict. There has not been any police complaints or criminal proceedings against Kangana on drug charges yet. Shiv Sena government in Maharashtra demolished some portion of her house in Mumbai due to allegations of illegal construction. Kangana has denied these allegations. She even equated Mumbai with POK(Pakistan Occupied Kashmir).
She takes up the cause of the Bollywood industry, like an activist. Pouncing on the Maharashtra Shiva Sena government like Jhansi Ki Rani. She even took Jaya Bachchan by throat on twitter. See the tweet she made to remind Jaya Bachchan of the need to be impartial in probing drugs scandal in Bollywood.
Kangana also has talked tough about the need for discipline in Bollywood. Asking for CBI probe into Sushant Singh Rajput death, she came down heavily on media. She opines that so called liberals’ have destroyed Bollywood.
Tollywood Drug Saga
Recently there was huge storm in Tollywood(Hyderabad) regarding drug usage. Famous actors, both mainstream movies and TV, were questioned. The case never went ahead for any trials let alone prosecution. Now in Bangalore we are seeing the drugs making waves in Sandalwood industry. These scandals are reaching the doorsteps of brokers and politicians.
Punjab Drug Saga
Sher-e-Punjab is known for food, music, dance. Bollywood Drug episodes run in popular Punjabi culture. Popular singers in Punjab have been in lime light for doing drugs. Extravagant songs shot in exclusive foreign locations with high speed cars and booby woman. Bhangra music combined with western rap, hip-hop can be solid companion for drugs. Unemployed Punjabi youth would either jump the fences illegally through Mexico to enter USA or Canada or end up singing Bhangra mixed hip-hop consuming drugs savored in alcohol.
Can the tiger Punjabis please wakeup to realities and work hard for betterment of their state ? May be its time to infuse some true Punjabi blood into these new generation pop song snow flakes. Sunny Deol, please take this up on priority.
Bollywood Drug saga is not so universal as it appears. There are always bad apples. But the essence of Bollywood is in its power to withstand the changes in societies and adapt.
Superstars never consumed drugs
We have seen old bollywood actors going crazy, failing in relationships or utmost becoming reclusive for lack of public attention. We know of Rajesh Khanna who would smoke 20 packs of Cigarettes’ a day in his later years. He was alone in his palatial house, smoking away his yester year stardom. But we didn’t see or hear him doing drugs.
We know Amitabh Bachchan went through tough phase after the ABCD company debacle. But he didn’t do drugs. He made Kaun Banega Crorepati and had written off all his debts in few years. We don’t even hear or see him smoking or drinking in real life.
Mega Star Dharmendra was in his low when Amitabh Bachchan peaked bollywood arena. His movies flopped continuously for a decade. But we never heard about him taking to drugs even once. He is true Punjabi to the core, withstanding all the life gives with meat and muscle. Similarly there are innumerable stars like Shatrughan Sinha, Raj Kumar who went through tough times but didn’t see the need for drugs in their board room.
We don’t hear superstars from South doing drugs. We can surely say that drugs is confined to small section of insecure, uncooked actors who have no patience or guts to face up to the realities of the movie world.
Ravi Kishan vs Jaya Bachan
When Ravi Kishan, the famous actor raised this Drugs issue in Parliament, Jaya Bachchan pounced on him with verbal onslaught. Calling him a traitor who spits on the plate he eats. Not sure what she really meant, but the issue raised by Ravi Kishan is valid enough for scrutiny. Its taken that Drugs do make rounds in Bollywood. Drugs also play role in criminal syndicates gaining control of the cinema narrative in Bollywood which is not such a sweet outcome.
Imagine drug peddler narrating movie plots. Creative industries are bound to be open to bad ideas, just that they need to be limited to on screen performances. Real life dramas are more driven by complex rules that we made for ourselves. Its in our interest to give these rules the sanctity they deserve to protect the fine balance between wishful thinking and needed optimism.
Lets finish this article with famous quote from Amitabh Bachchan ” Hum jahan khade hote hain, Line wahise suru hoti hain ” (The line starts from the place where I stand). Its never too late to make a fresh start for Bollywood. Lets hope the young bollywood aspirants understand the need for discpline, hardwork, dediation and honesty to present their skills to the public. The alternatives are too dangerous for the industry.
